Engineering the Future

Engineering the Future: 2026 Detroit Construction Science Expo Inspired the Next Generation

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the Detroit Construction Science Expo welcomed more than 1,000 students to the Durfee Innovation Society for a hands-on introduction to careers in engineering, construction, skilled trades, and infrastructure. The event provided an opportunity for industry professionals, public officials, educators, and workforce development partners to connect with Detroit-area youth and introduce them to the skills, career pathways, and opportunities that support Michigan’s infrastructure industry.

Engineering-Focused, Student-Centered

Engineering once again took center stage at this year’s expo, with interactive exhibits designed to help students connect classroom learning to real-world careers. Students had the opportunity to:

• Design and construct model bridges
• Explore civil, mechanical, and structural engineering principles
• Participate in uncrewed aerial system demonstrations and mapping activities
• Engage with licensed engineers, technical professionals, and education partners about academic and career pathways

In addition to engineering-focused stations, students also explored skilled trades and construction-related activities, including masonry, heavy equipment operation, electrical systems, and other hands-on demonstrations that showcased the wide range of career options within the built environment.

Supporting Workforce Development Through Early Engagement

Ron Brenke, Executive Director of ACEC/Michigan, emphasized the importance of introducing students to engineering careers early:

“Events like the Construction Science Expo are vital in sparking interest among young students in engineering careers. By providing hands-on experiences, we can inspire the next generation to pursue paths that will shape and improve our communities.”

The event was a key component of the Black Caucus Foundation’s “Navigation to Success” program, which required participating students to complete a life-skills curriculum and commit to a drug-free lifestyle. The program reinforced professional readiness and personal growth alongside career exploration.

Partners in Engineering Education

ACEC/Michigan and its member firms were proud to support the 2026 Detroit Construction Science Expo by helping students see the real-world impact of engineering in transportation, water systems, public safety, design, technology, and infrastructure. Through interactive displays and direct conversations with professionals, volunteers demonstrated how engineers solve problems, improve communities, and help shape Michigan’s future.

Looking Ahead

With continued leadership from the Black Caucus Foundation of Michigan and strong support from industry and education partners, the Detroit Construction Science Expo continued to serve as a powerful platform for building a more diverse, skilled, and inspired engineering and construction workforce.
